Adventures Of The Prognosticating Rodent

And so it was that one early February morning, the groundhog woke up to the sound of his alarm clock. He turned it off, sighed in dismay, and looked at the calendar. The second of February was marked, and the rodent shook his head, wondering why he kept human calendars when he preferred to sleep all winter long, and who among his friends had come into his burrow and set his alarm clock. He would have preferred to sleep until May.

He got out of bed, sauntered down the passage, and there at the entrance he found the passage blocked with snow. Digging through, he reached the outside. And what did he see? A blinding snowstorm. Oh, the hell with this, he thought. I'm going back to bed until July.

  2. Living in Florida has kept me detached from Groundhog Day. It's never been a big deal for me but it sure is a big deal to all of you who have to be buried in snow. Read a couple blogs today on the fury fella. Thank you, William, for making this guy more real to me. Didn't even think he mattered that much.

  4. I love the hypothermia one! Never understood why he stays out only if the day is gray and gloomy.

  6. I saw my first groundhog when I moved to MD. I just love how they scamper for dear life! They always look so paranoid.

  12. You know, what's needed is a lapel ribbon for Groundhog Awareness. Hmm, what color should it be?

  14. The awareness ribbon would have to be tan, of course... assuming that's not already taken by the Swedish Tanning Models Awareness Association.

We've got groundhogs on the university campus. They're out more in the summer when there are less people around.
