Top of the morning to ye! Or as the case may be, top of the afternoon or evening to ye! Or, if you're reading this days from now, top of four days ago to ye!
It's St. Patrick's Day once again, and so it's time once more for a whole mess of pics and cartoons, some of which are guaranteed to get my sorry hide in trouble with the Sisters Of Little Or No Mercy, the Prince of Wales, and the Irish in general. If you haven't seen it by chance, check out Luck of the Irish, where our alter egos had their own take on the occasion.
Yes, every March 17th becomes the biggest drinking day of the year across many parts of the world, a day when everyone's just a little Irish.
Even our animal companions or overlords get co-opted into the celebrations. It might come back to haunt us in the form of a chewed up slipper or a shredded coat, but it amuses us lowly humans for some reason...
"Don't bid the devil good day till you meet him." ~ Irish proverb
And editorial cartoonists tend to incorporate the day into their work as well; check these out:
Totally gratuitous but somewhat on topic shot at the Scourge that is Twilight (hey, Bram Stoker was Irish, and he would be rolling over in his grave at the thought of Mr. Sparkles):
"Like an Irish wolf she barks at her own shadow" ~ Irish proverb
When everyone gets into it, I mean everyone.
Meanwhile, the Irish themselves have something of a reputation to live down...
"Never call a Kerry man a fool until you're sure he's not a rogue." ~ Irish proverb
"The road to Heaven is well signposted, but it is badly lit at night." ~ Irish proverb
With that, I leave you to your own festivities. In the words of the Irish, slainte, and don't do anything I wouldn't do. If you'll excuse me, the Sisters Of Little Or No Mercy want to have a word with me. It seems they don't take lightly to having their reputations dragged through the coals. If anything... unfortunate happens to me and it looks like I bought the farm after being hit repeatedly by a ruler, arrest Sister Moira O'Shaughnessy. She's got a bit of a temper.
"I swear, Camilla, this is the last time I dress in green." |
You always find the best toons!
ReplyDeleteAnd a very Happy St. Patrick 's Day to you, partner! May the coming election bring you a wealth of material for future blogs!
I see Norma's encouraging your bad behavior regarding our delightful political candidates! LOL
ReplyDeleteHappy St. Patrick's Day William!
My, my...look at those knobby royal knees...dressed in green, no less. Yuck!
ReplyDeleteLove the pics! Very Irish...
Hope you had a great day!!
This if funny except for the dog drinking beer. Beer can kill a dog. It can probably kill a human in large enough amounts too, but...
ReplyDeleteGood that I didn't post the babies with Guinness pic then!
ReplyDeleteI can pretty much guarantee that my dad will be watching The Quiet Man tonight. It's his idea of an Irish movie.
ReplyDeleteI don't like John Wayne, and my idea of a good Irish movie would have to be The Commitments.
Go Sabhála Dia Éire!
ReplyDelete(At least I think that is how it is spelled.) :-)
As always, Sir Wills, TFF! Happy Greenie Day, to you, too.
ReplyDeleteI love the guys having a pint in a flood. And the Bram Stoker one, a bit of a stretch, but I like it.

I celebrated with Irish cream filled Guinness cupcakes. :)
ReplyDeleteYou might like the comic that my local paper published yesterday as well: http://www.therecord.com/opinion/cartoons/article/688361--march-17-cartoon.
Ah yes, I remember St Patrick's Day in Ottawa - sort of... it's a bit hazy. :) Could be the drink!
ReplyDeleteHope you had a good one.
Happy Day After St. Patrick's Day and Erin Go Braless!
ReplyDeleteLove the toons as always...
ReplyDeleteWhen I live in California John Wayne was a neighbor even if you didn't live right next to him... he would be at the old Santa Anna Airport with his plane and you would see him driving his car.
I rather like The Quiet Man but also a big fan of The Commitments. I have the OST...
My American son works part time at an Irish Bar in Nishinomiya Japan owned by an Irish Man, staffed with Australians, a few odd Englishmen and of course some Japanese thrown in for luck... as I understand they had a great party !
cheers, parsnip
The first one killed me! The 'drunken brawl' one at the end made me laugh too.
ReplyDeleteReally stopped by to say a quick thanks for the words of support you left on the blog last week. It was a tough time for my family and the support was much appreciated.
EJ
Laughing out loud. Can count on you for that. Hope you had a drunken brawl on St. Patrick's Day.
ReplyDeleteI did not.
Yep pretty much just a drinking day. But I sure do love the Irish!!
