It was not unexpected given his health for many years, but still, a shock. Rest in peace to a great and good man, to the greatest champion of his sport.
I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, but would someone please tell me why this befuddled boxer was considered such a "good man" or "hero." Perhaps I'm ignorant but what exactly did he do that would bring him such accolades?
Boxing is a horrendous and barbarous sport and it left him so broken he had to turn to religion for comfort. Just asking.
@Lowell: I think he transcended his sport, particularly later on in his life. He was a complicated man, certainly, but he became a defining figure of the century.
@Shelly: that's the way he struck me, particularly after his days in the ring.
Comments and opinions always welcome. If you're a spammer, your messages aren't going to last long here, even if they do make it past the spam filters. Keep it up with the spam, and I'll send Dick Cheney after you.
Hard to believe he's gone. So many celebrities have gone recently, it's surreal. RIP, Ali.

ReplyDeleteALI was a survivor.
ReplyDeleteYes, not a surprise but still sad.
ReplyDeleteThere's something wrong with turning to religion?
ReplyDeleteHe'll be remembered by most of us, and a role model for many.
@Diane: it seems an epidemic at times.

@Norma: indeed.
